Scotty McCreery Steps Up for Fight Against Hunger
By Bob Paxman
Scotty McCreery is teaming up with dosomething.org and Walmart in a project that's fun and, even better, helps a great cause. Scotty is encouraging teens to join him in the “Peanut Butter & Jam Slam” in an effort to collect one of the top-requested items at food banks across the country: peanut butter.
The campaign's goal is to collect as many jars of peanut butter and jelly as possible by the campaign deadline of May 14. Scotty is appearing in a special public service announcement, which you can see below, to encourage teens to get started on their peanut butter and jam drives.
“Millions of kids experience hunger every day, but it doesn't have to be this way,” Scotty said in a release about the program. “That’s why I’m lending my voice (yes, very low voice) to help motivate teens to collect jars of peanut butter and jelly to help fight hunger.”

Still a lot of Idol worship for Scotty McCreery

As the Season 10 “American Idol” winner, 19-year-old Scotty McCreery is trying to live up to a lot of accolades. At his performance Friday at the Rapids Theatre in Niagara Falls, the first stop on his 2013 Weekend Roadtrip Tour, he proved that although his songs have a little maturing to do, he’s earned every bit of that praise.
A surprisingly mixed audience was in attendance, with the Rapids housing everyone from NASCAR jacket-sporting dads to pink cowboy hat-wearing teenage girls. However, when the lights dimmed and McCreery launched into his first song, the high-decibel shrieks of “We love you, Scotty!” showed which demographic is his most enthusiastic following.
McCreery was a delight to watch. Blessed with youthful good looks and good ol’ boy charm, he is a natural showman with a deep, melodious voice to match. Although the songs from his first album, 2012’s “Clear as Day,” won’t be winning any awards for originality anytime soon, they don’t have to; McCreery’s booming voice makes anything sound good. Songs that focused on the joys of small-town life came across as truly authentic instead of contrived – “Water Tower Town,” for instance, used images and video shot in his actual hometown of Garner, N.C – and the songs heralding young love and the excitement of being a teenager in the summer (“The Trouble With Girls,” “Sun Tan”) earned him the most screams of adoration from his young fans.
Some of McCreery’s strongest performances were covers of country classics, a few of which he sang during his 2011 “American Idol” ascent. “Check Yes or No” by George Strait, “Gone” by Montgomery Gentry, and “Papa Loves Mama” by Garth Brooks all exhibited his ability to hold his own with some of the biggest names in country music. He also performed bits from some older musical influences, such as Conway Twitty, Johnny Cash and even Elvis Presley.
Although McCreery largely kept things fast-paced and fun, he also showed his tender side with a touching cover of Jamey Johnson’s “In Color” and a duet with opener Sarah Darling of “The Dance.”

Scotty McCreery Debuts Two New Songs Live in Concert
Courtsey - Taste of Country
by: Sterling Whitaker
One of country’s favorite ‘American Idol‘ winners Scotty McCreery debuted two new and unreleased songs at a recent concert, giving fans a hint of what may lie in store on his upcoming sophomore studio album. The 19-year-old singer won Season 10 of ‘Idol,’ and in 2011 he released his debut album ‘Clear as Day,’ which has been certified Platinum. The young star has been touring the world since, and he also released a successful Christmas album last year, but his focus lately (besides school) has been on his upcoming second studio record, for which he says he is writing some of the songs. ‘Suntan‘ is a perfect commercial vehicle for the young star, who has expressed his specific desire to find a hit single for his next record. “You know, in the last year I’ve won awards, I’ve had sold out shows across the country, but I haven’t had that big radio hit yet,” McCreery told Taste of Country in October of 2012. “So that’s my mission right now. So I’ve got to go out there and try to find it.” ‘Suntan’ could certainly fit the bill. It’s exactly the kind of song that radio is playing right now, so it would appeal to program directors’ penchant for repeating the success they just had. It’s also a song with a young attitude that would play perfectly as a light, fun summer single. ‘See You Tonight’ is another unreleased song that has strong potential as a single, with a lyric about a young man pining to see his girlfriend in person instead of just talking to her on the phone. The song features a strong chorus, and McCreery’s voice is just unique enough to make what could be a relatively ordinary piece of material shine in the right studio recording. It’s not immediately apparent whether McCreery wrote or co-wrote either of the new songs, but he has certainly expressed his desire to do so. “Some of the guys from Nashville will follow us on the road so in our spare time we can write, and [I'll also] find a few days for me to go to Nashville [to write] as well, so I’m excited,” he enthused last July. “It will be the first time for me to have a cut of mine on the album.”

'American Idol' Scotty McCreery balancing music and education

Scotty McCreery was just 17 when he won the 10th season of "American Idol" in 2011. So it's to be expected his career will develop differently than most other music artists.
For one, McCreery finished his senior year at Garner High School in Garner, N.C., as his debut album, "Clear As Day," hit No. 1 on Billboard's albums chart, went platinum and earned him Best New Artists at both the American Country Awards and Academy of Country Music Awards.
Now, on his first tour as a headlining artist, McCreery will play only weekends, so as not to interfere with his studies as a freshman communications major at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
The tour kicks off Feb. 14 at Sands Bethlehem Event Center.
